December 8 - December 17, 2012

The elephant conservation project started in 2011. The pilot project was successful and we got very positive feedback from both volunteers and the local government. The aim of the project is to assist the local governmental Elephant Conservation Centre in looking after elephants.
The Elephant Conservation Centre Seblat was established in October 1992, located in District Putri Hijau, North Bengkulu (also known as Southwest Sumatra). On the basis of Forestry Ministry Decree, this conservation centre lies on 6.865 hectare of land. In this area, there are various flora and fauna species which are protected, such as tapir, deer, various kinds of snakes, gibbon, hoop, monkey, monkey tail short, wild elephants, and various kinds of birds. Last year there were 11 tamed elephants, both male and female, which were being taken care of by the conservation centre. The area is located in the middle of the rural region Seblat, surrounded by rubber and oil palm forest. This place can be reached either by car or by bus for approximately 5 hours from the airport or Bengkulu City. There are 4 neighboring villages closeby: Suka Maju, Suka Merindu, Suka Baru and Suka Medan.
The volunteers will help local mahouts daily to take care of the elephants starting from bathing/showering, feeding, health checking and grassing the elephants. One local mahout will be accompanied by two volunteers in doing the daily job.

Teaching English and starting a recycling bank in China

International volunteers are invited in Gongcheng County to support the local population in different educational, renovation and environmental conservation projects.

The volunteers will work in village schools, organising educational and cultural exchange activities for the students to help them improve their English. Games will also be used as a tool for encouraging the kids to speak English. During school holidays (from mid January to the end of February and from mid July to the end of August), the volunteers will work with children in children centres.

Another task for the group will be the renovation and protection of some historic buildings in Gongcheng. This may involve repairing a stone road, clearing a yard or work on small gardens around the buildings, etc.

The volunteers will also help start a recycling bank in the area. First, they will help build and operate the recycling bank where the garbage can be separated or incinerated. Then the volunteers will run a campaign in the nearby villages about garbage separation and recycling, and the importance of keeping the environment clean. The volunteers can use their creativity and imagination to demonstrate that recycling can be fun, e.g making a fish from plastic bottle or paper, making a small flower from straw, making an apron from milk box. The group can also help to make recycle bins.

Location: Gongcheng Yao Autonomous County is located in north-east of Guangxi Province, bordering on Yangshuo town to the west, 108 km away from Guilin city.

Volunteers are needed for an environmental event:
The event is called " PULL FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: 28 days to change the world, one person at a time".

We are pulling the world record breaking Xof1 Solar Car by hand from Toronto to Ottawa between May 1st and May 28th. While zigzag across Ontario covering 575 kilometers, we'll be stopping in communities along the way, challenging people to change something, anything, in their lives, for 28 days, that will help the environment.

Looking for enthusiastic volunteers right now:
We need volunteers from all types of backgrounds, to help us carry out various activities from Advertising/Marketing to Passing Out Flyers, from Organizing Presentations to Calling Contacts, and everything in between.
We also need people who can assist us in acquiring such items as cell phones, a medium size trailer, equipment, etc.

Here's how you will benefit:
You will have an experience to remember for a lifetime, meet other like minded individuals and be part of a movement that will have a long lasting, positive benefit on our environment.

Help us BEAT ARTHRITIS & AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES!

Volunteer March 4th and become a part of history as we celebrate Canada's largest yoga fundraiser, the POWER of MOVEMENT, while raising money and awareness for the 4.6 million Canadians living with these diseases!

It all started in 2005 when Dorna Chee made a phone call to the Arthritis Research Foundation in Toronto with an idea.

As a yoga teacher, Dorna had turned to her yoga breathing exercises to help her get through a long stay in hospital after being diagnosed with lupus, and she wanted to share her experience with other people who might benefit from yoga to manage an autoimmune illness. Dorna found support at the Arthritis Research Foundation, and the event was born.

In 2007 all initial expectations were surpassed. The inaugural event was hosted at the Wellesley Community Centre with 250 in attendance raising more than $50,000. Since then the event has outgrown the Wellesley and Toronto. In 2009 it became a National event and was hosted across Canada, from Nanaimo to Halifax.

Power of Movement was founded on one women's dream, the passion of volunteers and supporters and a lot of community engagement.

We are currently seeking volunteers for registration, greeters, mat placement, refreshments, and clean up for the following locations:

Winnipeg
Fort Garry Hotel- Grand Ballroom
222 Broadway
Winnipeg, MB R3C 0R3

Kyalalankuba Community School is a community owned school that was constructed through the help of international volunteer groups. Before 2007 this community had no school and the children had to walk long distances and literally stopped school during the rainy season. Volunteers have been working with this community since 2007 and there is now a school in the area.

Hi, my name is Patrick and I need your help. I am 5" 11 and weigh 170 Lbs.
I am 41 years old. I have an O blood type and I need a kidney transplant.
I enjoy watching football and cooking on the grill. I am in dire need of a transplant. Kidney disease runs in my family and I have it also. It has taken the life of my father and uncle. I have high blood pressure and take a lot of pills now just to maintain my declining health. I served my country. I was never in any war but was ready to serve where ever I was needed. If I could get a kidney transplant I would want to help kids by being a coach for a sports team in my town and spending time at the VA in my town to show my support of the other members of the armed forces who have sacrificed as I have in the past.

A new kidney would really help me get back on my feet and allow me to affect others in a positive way.
Can you help me?

Thank you so much.

-Patrick
The volunteers will support the work of a Rescue Center and will help providing the best care and living conditions to rescued animals that lived in captivation and semi captivation until their re-introduction to their original habitat. The animals that come to this Rescue Centre are often confiscated in the Police controls by order of the Ministry of Environment, they were victims of illegal traffic, or lived as pets.

Relapse tends to be common among those who have experienced at least one episode of depression, and risk of relapse is much greater among those who have experienced at least two previous separate episodes. Researchers at the Centre for Addiction and Mental health are investigating psychological interventions to help you STAY WELL after experiencing depression. We are interested in comparing two relapse prevention programs for people who have struggled with past depression, both of which have been shown to be effective in previous research. Eligible participants will be invited to take part in one of these two programs - there is no placebo condition for this study! Participation will include attending eight sessions of a relapse prevention group therapy, and completing surveys over a follow-up period.

This study may be a good fit for you if:

- you are between 18 and 65 years of age
- you have had at least one past episode of depression
- you are NOT currently depressed

If you would like to find out more about the study, please call us at 416-535-8501 ext. 6178 (voicemails welcome) or email us at: depressionstudy (at) camh (dot) net

2012 Toronto MS Walk (Sunnybrook Park)

The 2012 MS Walk is quickly approaching and is scheduled for the weekend of April 21st and 22nd at Sunnybrook Park.

Volunteers make a big impact and are essential for a successful event. There are many volunteer positions available at the MS Walk and your involvement helps bring us that much closer to ending MS. Here are a few examples of the different ways you can get involved in volunteering with the MS Walk:

Check-in Volunteers- Be the first faces the walkers see when they arrive! Greet them enthusiastically, ensure their paperwork is complete, process their pledges, and assist in distributing their t-shirts to get them ready for the day.
Food Preparation Volunteers- Help feed our hungry participants and celebrate their success of completing the walk! Assist with set-up and serving of breakfast and/or lunch, ensure the area is clean and food supply is maintained, and help with the take down once everyone's bellies are full.
Route Marshals- Encourage walkers as they make their way from start to finish! Ensure walkers are safe, have all their questions answered, and cheer them on as they pass you from a point along the route.
Checkpoint Volunteers- Provide a time for rest, snacks, and encouragement at our designated checkpoints! Set up the tables and banners, ensure snacks and liquids are maintained, and clean up once the final walkers pass through.
Finish Line- Cheer the walkers on as they cross the finish line for all they have accomplished!
Team MS- Welcome teams as they arrive to the site, including assisting with the team photos, distributing team gifts, and helping with set-up and take-down of the area.

There are also roles such as site set-up and take-down, parking, early check-in, and more! Training will be provided for these roles on the day of the event, with the exception of check-in, which will be asked to attend or teleconference in for a training session.

Aside from assisting at the MS Walk, there are other ways to get involved as well. Help spread the word to all of your friends and family and invite them to come out and participate! You can also register or pledge a participant. Find out more about the MS Walk at mswalks.ca.

Although the MS Walk is in April, it is best to sign up early and reserve your spot!

Are you interested in having your baby or child become a mini-scientist? If so, read below to learn more about Infant and Child Studies @ Ryerson University!

Researchers and students in the Psychology Department at Ryerson University are currently asking questions like:
How do babies recognize faces?
How do babies learn to solve new problems? Are they creative problem solvers?
How do young children learn from other people?

To answer questions like these, we need the help of families like yours. We would like to invite you to join our growing registry of parents who are interested in participating in research. Joining the registry does not obligate you to participate in any studies; it just gives us a way to let you know when your infant or child is the right age for a particular study.

Parents who have participated in our studies agree that the experience was an excellent learning opportunity for both themselves and their children!

We are currently recruiting babies and children of all ages, but especially children between the ages of 3 - 5 years, from Toronto and surrounding areas. We are conveniently located near the Eaton Centre with easy accessble by the TCC. If you are interested in learning more about Infant and Child Studies @ Ryerson, or having your child participate in a study, please contact us via phone or email:

2 to 12 months volunteering in a Hospital in Vietnam

Organizing games and fun activities for children in the National Pediatric hospital in Hanoi

2 -- 12 months

The National Hospital of Pediatrics (NHP) is specialized in treating children coming from different provinces in Vietnam. The hospital consists of 22 departments, with the number of treated patients amounting up to 1000-1200, ages ranging from infancy to nearly 17 years old. The majority of them are afflicted with difficult to cure ailments, such as hematologic, nephrologic, etc. Most patients come from low-income families in which parents are working in agriculture sector, leading a rather poor life. During the treatment period, the patients do not have opportunities to participate in common leisure activities and they often suffer from stress of staying long time in hospital, so having fun and activities to reduce worry and sadness while they are in the hospital is necessary.
The hospital itself is deficient in organizing psychology-care activities for little patients. Pediatrics patients have full rights to healthy development, both physically and spiritually, like other people. They also have desire to communicate, play and receive knowledge. The efforts made by all doctors and nurses in the hospital are not likely to meet all patients' needs.
Volunteers are needed to organize games and group activities for the children (e.g: singing, drawing, magic shows, etc). The volunteers can prepare a performance with the children every month. They can also help the Vietnamese volunteers to build playrooms, and a library.
The volunteers will support the children by playing with them. Through the games, the volunteers will help to distract the children from their physical and mental pain and they will not feel so much afraid of being in the hospital. We hope that the lovely children in the hospital will have sweet and comfortable time with both international and Vietnamese volunteers.

T.O's Eco Chase - Volunteers Needed (Downtown Toronto)

T.O's Eco Chase 2.0 (http://www.ecoduocanada.com/)

Last October the T.O's Eco Chase 2011 led a multitude of green conscious professionals on a scavenger race across Toronto, competing for the title of Eco Chase Champions!
Participants of this amazing scavenger race worked in teams to solve clues which lead them to exciting sustainable spots across Toronto, completing challenges -- amazing race style -- and learning about sustainability in the city along the way.

Last year's event attracted the who's who from the environmental community and sponsors included MEC, Authoshare, Bullfrog Power. This is a great opportunity for students or those interested in getting into the green field.

There are several ways you can get involved:

1) Partnership Coordinators:
In gearing up for Eco Chase 2.0 we are looking to secure select sponsors for the event. Last year's sponsors included Bullfrog Power, AutoShare, Mountain Equipment Co-Op etc. Attracting new sponsors would involve some emails, or direct contact to people in your corporate/green network letting them know of sponsorship levels and benefits. This role involves about a 5hr commitment per week, at your discretion leading up to the event on June 2nd, up to 3 in person meetings with the rest of the volunteer team and frequent email communication. We offer a 2% commission on sponsorship sold.

2) Volunteer Liaison
Eco Chase 1.0 was a huge success thanks to the amazing volunteers we were able to find thanks to connections among our friends, green network and universities. If you are affiliated with a university and can foster a relationship with the student groups there, finding suitable volunteers for the Eco Chase 2.0 (see below) this is a great role for you! This role involves developing a relationship which may take numerous follow ups and phone/email communication. The commitment also involves up to 3 in person meetings with the rest of the team prior to the event.

3) Social Media Promoter
Love tweeting and facebooking and want to put your skill towards a project that you can campaign around? We are looking to create conversations with Toronto greenies, and corporate sustainability teams to attract them to our event. The commitment would involve around 5 tweets a day as a minimum mentioning @ecoduo and Eco Chase 2.0.

4) Eco Chase Volunteers (we are looking for 30-40 in total)
This role involves up to 3 meetings prior to the event to educate you on the sustainable attractions featured in the next event, and on your role facilitating the race, including running challenges with our participants etc. The event involves a half day commitment in addition to above mentioned 3 education meetings of about 1.5 hr each.

4) Have other ideas? Check out our website to get an idea of what Eco Chase is all about. If you have other ideas of how we can work together - just let us know!

What's in it for you?
- network with other passionate green professionals
- an opportunity to make your mark on a real, hands on project that makes a difference
- we're happy to provide you references, written or verbal

We look forward to hearing back and meeting you soon!

Elena & Jame
TO's Eco Chase is brought to you by the Eco Duo
Specializing in sustainable education, hands on relationship building / workshops and networking.
Moreover, the area has vastly grassy field alternating with productive forest. The north and the east part are smoothly sloping down, while the south and the west part are rising up. The area is the source of five main rivers. Khao Yai has three main seasons, with an annual mean temperature of 23°C, though this varies greatly with the seasons. Tropical moist evergreen forest covers the central area of Khao Yai National Park. There is a rich diversity of plants (about 2,000 species). Towering trees draped in mosses, climbers and epiphytes, tangled trunks of the strangling figs, drooping lianas and spiny rattan palms, delicate ferns, multicolored lichens and an ever-changing array of fungi. There is always something new to discover in the forest. The park has a diverse plant community. Birds: We've got lots - over 320 species have been recorded. To the non-expert, birds are often just mysterious whistles, trills and calls, or a flutter of wings and a glimpse of color. Patience is needed and good binoculars.
Our Conservation Program works within the nearby national forest park and its forest rangers; this will give you the opportunity to help conserve this beautiful location whilst enjoying nature. This is the perfect program for someone with a keen interest in nature and outdoor activities, and who enjoys a challenge. Most of all enjoy yourselves and make life lasting friends through an experience you will never forget. Volunteers will work for the present and the future of ecological preservation, and elevate the protection of species and eco-systems within the national park.
The main task of the volunteer group is to engage in practical work in the local communities doing different kinds of support and development work. Possible activities are: teaching the children at local schools about the forest and the effects of poaching; work with the rangers in the park; planting trees, possibly together with the local population; making trails for eco-tourism in the park. The exact nature of the work will depend of the needs of the park in the different seasons. The participants will also take part in cultural exchange activities with the locals.
Please, remember that the work is primarily a tool for building relationships with one another. So take time to socialize and let friendships develop.

The volunteers will learn about the culture of rural Thailand in general and the traditions and specificity of the region. Thai language lessons will also be given to the volunteers.
Age range: 18 and over

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-thailand.htm

For volunteer opportunities in other countries go to: www.cadip.org or give us a call: 416-943-4900

The Ontario Health Coalition is a network of over 400 grassroots community organizations representing virtually all areas of Ontario. Our primary goal is to empower the members of our constituent organizations to become actively engaged in the making of public policy on matters related to health care and healthy communities. To this end, we seek to provide to member organizations and the broader public ongoing information about their health care system and its programs and services. Through public education and support for public debate, we contribute to the maintenance and extension of a system of checks and balances that is essential to good decision-making. We are an extremely collaborative organization, actively working with others to share resources and information. We are a non-partisan group committed to maintaining and enhancing our publicly-funded, publicly-administered health care system. We work to honour and strengthen the principles of the Canada Health Act.

The OHC is currently looking for casual volunteers to help with our annual Garlic Fundraiser. Volunteer tasks involve helping prepare fundraising materials, and packaging organic local garlic to be sold through our website and at local conferences. Youth are welcome, as are all friendly, dedicated and hard working individuals. Our office is open Monday to Friday from 9am - 5pm.

For more information, and to get in touch with us, please call (416) 441-2502 or email ohc@sympatico.ca and tell us a little about yourself and your availability. We need volunteers ASAP so don't delay. We'd love to meet you and see whether the OHC would be a good fit for you.
The city has recorded history dating back a thousand years and a mythical history which explains the origin of the name - apparently, this was the place where the demon Mahishasura was slain by the Goddess Chamundi. You will find a statue of the demon on Chamundi hill which commemorates this event.
In the frame of the project, the volunteers will be working with the tribal community in the field of education, renovation, environmental protection, reforestation, tree planting, spreading health and hygiene awareness among the tribal villages. We will be working together in building a more peaceful and working environment with the help of a local organization. Volunteers will need to be creative in their approach to give out the message through drama and street plays. Volunteers who participate in this project need to bring materials and ideas for the program on their arrival, after which the whole group will settle on a common plan of action.
