INTERMEDIATE SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR

DESCRIPTION
The Intermediate Systems Administrator is responsible for performing the day-to-day operating system administrative activities for Computing Services-managed Web servers running the OSX, OpenSolaris, and Linux operating systems. In addition, the incumbent will perform assigned system administration duties for all network services in support of web delivery and the web development environment. This will require familiarity in software deployment and integration in a Unix environment, working predominately with Open Source tools and programs. This can include development of web applications with at least a scripting language requirement. The incumbent reports to the System Team Lead through whom general direction and priorities are set.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• UNIX-based Server installation, hardening, monitoring and performance tuning.
• Shared primary SA for all data-center related facilities issues (power, generator, cooling)
• Shared primary SA for all production web servers, responsible for application deployments, and regular maintenance
• Planning and patch management
• Technical documentation
• Work with and be available to support Development and QA users and all servers hosting a variety of applications, as well as other systems as assigned
• General system maintenance on all servers, with ability to respond to support tickets escalated to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level support.
• Diagnose server-hardware issues and complete all hardware-related maintenance (eg: swap a drive, rack-mount a server)
• Use technical knowledge to work with and maintain a variety of server-based applications such as Net Vault, Nagios, Jira, CVS, and SVN.
• Understand and support other systems and applications as needed.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS
• Excellent written/verbal communications skills
• Excellent system level troubleshooting skills
• Detail oriented with superior problem solving skills
• Must be willing to carry a pager/phone and work into a 4 to 5 week on-call rotation ( financial compensation for on-call hours)
• Must have a valid drivers license and have access to a vehicle 24/7 when on call
TECHNICAL EXPECTATIONS
• 6+ years of education and work experience
• 3+ years of Unix/Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP work experience.
• All educational credentials must be recognized in Canada.
• Experience with Mac platform an asset
