While I would agree that we should not let just anyone in, it must be said that we don't do that. A system of checking the backgrounds of potential immigrants is already in place but perhaps it needs to be more stringent. Also I would suggest that our domestic laws are slack and too mild. The punishment for breaking laws especially serious violations such as murder should be punished more severely. As well I feel tyhat the immigrant who commits a serious violation should be deported regardless of whether citizenship has already been bestowed and this jeopardy should remain for all of the new immigrants life. There are however, some statements that you make that I disagree with.
1) You said "not all religions are compatible". That has been said many times before and prooven untrue. There was a time, not very long ago, when it was widely believed that Christians and Jews were not compatible and millions died. At the time of the crusades Christians killed many thousands simply because they were of a different religion. Christians even killed each other during the inquisition, and many times throughtout history Catholics killed Protestants and other times the reverse was true, particularly in that supposedly civilised country of England. But now all of those people have learned, with some few exceptions, to coexist. This has also been the case with Macedonians and Greeks, Serbs and Croats, French and English, Irish and English and countless others. At the time of the great immigration of Irish into Canada they were though by many to be a grave threat to the country and undesirable, as were the Italians, but both have settled in beautifully and contributed greatly to the country. These many groups are at different stages of mutual acceptance, why would this not also be true of Rwanda or the middle east. Time does not stand still. We cannot take a snapshot of a cultural or religious conflict and assume that it will be the same always.
3) "But we came here with nothing and built from that, there was no public housing, social assistance, healthcare etc". While I agree wholeheartedly that easily accessible social welfare is not good for people, and I also am very proud of my ancesters who came with nothing and carved out a life for themselves under difficult circumstances, we can't blame immigrants for accepting what our government offers them, anyone would. The problem is with us and our government not the immigrant.
4) "The Idea behind mass immigration is simple. It's business........ making money" It is common to seperate "business" from ourselves and say those awful guys are making money, But we are those awful guys, business is what many of us do, and it's what supports most of the rest of us, pays our salaries, and hires our children. I don't know what you do, but many of us participate in business, it represents by far the largest part of our economy. Business is us, it is just human activity.
5) "Perhaps a stable, sustained economy is better", you may be right. But don't be too quick too switch over to a controlled economy without very careful consideration. Don't forget that was the type of economy that failed so miserably to provide for people's needs and wants in Russia. Lack of growth, a stable and sustained ecomony ,is what we experience in a recession like the present one, or the depression of the thirties and it's not very pleasant. Perhaps you're right and it maybe can be done differently but I would be reluctant to try it without some assurance that we weren't going to suffer a similar fate.
6) I agree with screening people more stringently. I agree that we are too generous with our social assistance, both to immigrants and to our established citizens, and yes quality over quantity in immigration should be our goal but I would disagree with you that ""Our own past history ........... has proven that that (importing conflict) is in fact the case."As the many groups from English to French, Greek German, Jewish, Irish, Italian etc. have shown people can and do change and blend. I agree with your two final statements "We need to screen the people far more closely than ever before" and "We need quality not quantity".
