Interesting reading the different views.
Being an immigrant myself some 50 years ago , being poor ,living in a basement apartment on Bloor and Chrsitie as a kid , I think I can add some obvious problems to this argument/discussion.
Fact is not all religions are compatible with one another..the proof is in the pudding today all over the world and growing minute by minute.
Not all cultures are compatible with one another. Proof , again is world wide as countries that allowed mass , unchecked immigration are now rethinking it and battling the religious and social disorder constantly occuring by warring sides and views.
Warring is the operative word here people.
I am not against immigration at all . Being an immigrant myself and the fact that we were given the chance to come to a country where my father and mother could build a good "safe" life for their family has always meant so much.
But we came here with nothing and built from that , there was no public housing, social assitance , healthcare etc.
We were given nothing and earned our place here.
More than that, we earned the right as Canadians for well over 50 years to state our views and fears regarding what we are seeing in immigration today.
The idea behind mass immigration is simple.
It's business..................making money.
The idea is this, in order to keep an economy growing year after year you need population growth.
But that's assuming you must have a constantly growing economy.........Perhaps a stable , sustained economy is better?
I am not sure.
I only know this. If we are not careful who and what cultures we allow to come here , we can look forward to violence and increased social costs.
How can one not expect , that if one comes from a war torn country that has a low value for life because of how things were to not bring that with them?
How can we not think that we are not importing middle east issues and violence from the countries that are in violent turmoil due to differing religious ideals?
Our own past history with humanitarian immigration has proven that, that is in fact the case.
I for one have no problems allowing anyone that can add value to our country to come here.
But mass unchecked immigration?...I think not.
My fears are warranted , will we be importing the world of the UN in Rwanda , or Somalia, or begin fighting the battles right here in our country that we are fighting now in the middle east as we speak ?
I think , more than ever before , immigration needs to be far more selective and more demanding for the safety and the future of our country as we have it now.
We need to screen the people far more closely than ever before.
We need quality..not quantity.
