In Toronto pounds, the rate of animal killing is horrifically high. In 2010, Toronto Animal Services has killed over 58% of the cats they have received: 5,446 cats have been outrageously killed by Toronto Animal Services in 2010 alone (official data). Other pounds in the Greater Toronto Area kill an even higher rate of companion animals.

Pound directors and staff often invoke "lack of funds" as an excuse for the killing. In reality it is not money that is needed, but good will. They miss the compassion needed to implement alternative measure to killing, such as Trap Neuter and Return for feral cats; aggressive adoption on and off site; working with rescues and the community; promoting volunteerism; implementing low cost spay and neuter programs.

Nathan Winograd has proven that killing animals is unnecessary. He has transformed high-kills pounds in San Francisco, New York and even in rural parts of the States overnight into no-kill shelters.

That is why we have invited Nathan Winograd to Toronto. ORA cannot save the thousands of cats that end in city pounds as we operate without staff, we do not even have a building and no public funding. We operate on a shoe string budget. Any cat in our care cost us $1.40 a day against the preposterous $20 to $30 cost of keeping a cat in a city pounds (that is before killing them)!!! We are sickened by this continued slaughter of cats and dogs and we want to see it come to an end.

Directors of city pounds and Toronto city councillors will attend the Nathan Winograd event and we hope that it will contribute towards changing the fate of the many thousands of poor defenseless animals whose lives are violently ended for no reason, year after year. Nobody should be allowed to do that. We cannot allow it to continue.

Let's Stop the Killing. Join the No-Kill Revolution, and attend the Nathan Winograd event. We have the power to make things change by putting pressure on the decision makers, politicians and administrators. They are paid with taxpayer money, they are accountable to us. We must be informed in order to keep up the pressure to implement alternative solutions to the killing.

This is a very enlightening event. Nathan Winograd, a former criminal prosecutor and attorney, is a very knowledgeable and very sought after speaker lecturing all over the United States. We are very proud to have him in Toronto on April 14!

Charleston (black and white) is a gentle little man who is from a litter of nine kittens that were rescued from a high kill shelter. Shelter Policies ( off the top of my head )

Hamilton Animal Control- 3 days till euthanasia ( most likely ) or if your pet is lucky they may have a chance of being saved by a cat rescue/spca.

Mississauga Animal Services- 5 days without collar- ten days with a collar- if the shelter is full euthanasia.

Toronto Animal Services- 5 days- the beneficial thing is that they have 4 locations, do adoptions out of Pet Smart & also partnered with rescues/Toronto Humane Society.

If your pet is elderly their chances are slim to none. Senior pets do very poorly health wise in shelters.

Shelters Assume a pet over a certain age who is not spayed/neutered have no owner. Please spay/neuter your pets.

Micro-chips may be helpful as long as you keep the current information updated with the company. Most people neglect to " active" the chip once adopted.

So here's what you do

Contact your local shelter & report the animal missing. Pictures are an added bonus- you can email or go in person.

Advertise on local websites under pets- craigslist or kijji are high traffic sites.

Contact local rescues in your area & see if your pet is in their care.

Post flyers in high traffic areas in your neighborhood.

Meet your neighbors- go door to door ( with a friend ) and see if someone has taken in your pet.

Offer a reward

Out Come-

If you wait too long your pet may end up euthanized, legally become " property" of the shelter/finder/rescue group.
So please keep your cats indoors- spay/neutered & keep your loved ones safe.

For almost 4 years I have ran a cat rescue and it's time for me to move on to other venues. Throughout the years I have rescued thousands of cats/kittens from shelters, streets, owner surrenders, etc. I have gained so much knowledge and experience and I am grateful for what I have learned.

Floyd is a very sweet, playful and loving cat.
He is a 1 year old grey tabby that looks like a silver fox because of his big foxy ears. He is a girly man! he has a girly meow, but he is also a stud, lean and muscular. He is an athlete, in comparison to other cats, he jumps twice as high as the others and does back twists. This guy is very affectionate and loves to snuggle, you might wake up to find him dangling his long paws over your leg, followed by a long morning stretch. He is a little awkward when you try to pick him up (I dont think he was held much as a kitten) and will make a meow that sounds like a girly Nooooooooooo! But then he will relax a little, but want to be put down. He loves to play! chase, cat nip, bird feather....cardboard box (almost as good at cardboard box as maru).

Now heres why we have to find our little buddy a new home:
We met floyd in the backyard of our place where we gardened, and he lived on the porch then (his owner had "moved" him outside, and abandoned him for good when he packed up and left without notice! We know that he had some legal and drug problems and got the cat for his girlfriend, but they broke up). Winter was coming and we couldnt just leave him out there, especically because he was so sweet and would always greet us in the yard...So we took him inside, but it was honestly a bad idea from the start because we already have 2 indoor cats (sisters) who hate male cats....they are bossying and bullying and hissing at poor little floyd, and I've tried everything to make them get along, but my cats are just b*tches.

We are looking for someone who is very loving to give him a good home (having outdoor access would be a bonus, I think he really likes outside in the summertime) If you're interested call matt and julia at 416 871 5248.

Valen is a 3yr old, Black & White male cat. He's incredible with our 8month old baby (she can do anything to him and he loves it) and is very loving. He could be confused with a dog, with his love for playing and affection.

Flint is a 4yr old, calico female cat. Flint is a very loyal cat that shows her affection to those that show it to her.

Well after two years, I have tried everything and he just hates me. I am torn because he is capable of so much love but he absolutely hates me everytime I try. Tucker is a friendly and outgoing 6-year old Simese/Persian male cat looking for a new home. My boyfriend and I are moving into a condominium that is not pet-friendly. As a result, we are being asked to find a new home for Tucker. Tucker is neutered and had recieved his shots as a kitten. He has grown up around small children and would make for a great family cat! Tucker is not declawed but uses his scratching post regularly.

Tucker has always lived alone and thus we are not sure how he would react to other animals in the home. The new owner will recieve food, litter sand, litter box, scratching post, etc.

Sudbury ON, (January 30, 2012) -- The Ontario SPCA Sudbury Branch is reaching out to the public to find homes for rabbits.

"These sweet animals were living in poor conditions and without food, water; they were neglected and not receiving proper care. We are looking for loving homes that can provide them with the proper care they deserve", says Agent Tracy Lapping, Ontario SPCA.

The previous owner, a man for Manitoulin area has been charged with 9 counts under the Ontario SPCA Act and if convicted could face 2 years imprisonment, a lifetime ban from owning an animal, and up to $60,000 in fines.

Rabbit Rescue Inc. (www.rabbitrescue.ca) is assisting the Sudbury SPCA with a recent surrender of 75 domestic rabbits from the hoarding situation mentioned above. We are in desperate need of foster homes for them, so if anyone has ever thought about fostering an animal in need, the need is now. If you have considered adopting a rabbit as a house pet, fostering one is a great way to see if a pet rabbit is right for you.

Rabbit Rescue will cover all medical expenses as well as spaying and neutering and give you any supplies you will need (pen, litterbins, bowls), you just need to supply the love. Most of these rabbits are lops, dutches and dwarfs - many babies as well. This is a VERY desperate plea. No bunnies should ever have to suffer like these ones have. The number of rabbits Rabbit Rescue can save is only limited to the amount of foster homes we have. The more foster homes we have, the more lives we can save.

We also desperately need monetary donations to help cover the costs for vetting and altering these bunnies. If you are unable to foster, you can still help by making a donation towards their care - Rabbit Rescue Inc. is a registered charity and you will get a tax receipt for any donation.

Also a pair of tickets to any Toronto film festival screenings of the film.
