Action Volunteers for Animals, also known as AVA, is a registered charity helping animals and people
since 1972. Our mandate is to reduce the numbers of homeless animals primarily though controlling cat
colonies through trap, neuter, release programs, and socializing, restoring to good health and adopting
out altered tame cats and kittens.
Most animal agencies are not dealing with the root cause of the animal overpopulation problem, failure to
spay or neuter. As a result of AVA's relationship with various animal control agencies in the Durham
region and our work with the public and colonies in Oshawa including Lakeview Park, Action Volunteers
for Animals sees a real need for a low cost accessible spay/neuter clinic/program in Durham region.
Action Volunteers for Animals has submitted this idea to the Aviva Community Fund Competition.
A Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic would cause huge positive changes in the animal control sector of the
communities of Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. If AVA's idea receives enough votes, it will have a
chance at sharing in $500,000 to bring a Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic in Durham to life. Eventually this
would affect AVA's ability to fund many, many more sick and injured animals from all communities that
AVA serves, not just Durham. In addition it must be mentioned that we are willing to locate the clinic in a
pre-existing building in the Pickering/Ajax/Whitby/Oshawa areas in cooperation with another animal
agency. AVA would really appreciate your help in pushing this idea to the finals.
Similar clinics just recently opened in Newmarket and Barrie in cooperation with the OSPCA. They were
fashioned on American models that estimate a 70% decrease in intakes and euthanasia experienced by
pounds and shelters. The Newmarket clinic opened in February 2009. Between March 2009 and August
of 2009, 2500 surgeries had been performed. The Barrie clinic opened in August 2009. These clinics have
had waiting lists from the moment they opened their doors. There is obviously a need and definitely a need
in Oshawa. The estimated cost would be between $100,000 and $250,000 depending on whether we could
locate the clinic within an existing building in cooperation with another animal welfare agency.
