Chapter1: Setting Value & Form
This Full length "Start To Finish" DVD begins with setting our base colour's and blocking in our major shapes and forms. All base colour's are listed and blocked in on screen in this chapter..
Chapter 2: Transition Stokes And Colour
This chapter concentrates on the creation of shape and form. The viewer is taught to use direction of stroke and negative painting to establish basic shape and form. The use of transition stokes are introduced and demonstrated. Larger area's are then broken down to further the creation of shape and structure.
Chapter 3: Adding Detail
With a solid foundation and strong structure and form established we move on to the creation of detail. The viewer learns the use of working back and forth between their vales and the use of colour temperature change. The use of "washes" and airbrush washes are introduced in this chapter, note that a airbrush is not required, but is an asset to the evolving artist.
Chapter 4: Detailing The Face
This chapter demonstrates the art of fine detail through the use of "area break down". The viewer will learn to detail the nose, add fine detail to the muzzle fur, detail the eyes and how to differentiate between short and long hair brush strokes.
Chapter 5: Detailing The Mane
Detailing now continues to the long hair of the mane. once again specific instruction is given in the area of using warm and cool colour's and the use of directional strokes to enhance the look of fur. The importance of light source and light play on the form is explained as detail is built up. Instruction continues with the use of variation and the importance of thick and thin line. This chapter ends with how to create subtle and strong curves in fur.
Chapter 6: Detailing the Muzzle
This chapter explains the use of alternate colour's and how to achieve the "look" of white fur. Instruction also details the technique of over lapping shape and softening edges with transition strokes and transition colour. This chapter finishes with the application of transition from light areas into the shadowed areas of the muzzle.
Chapter 7: Finishing Detail
This chapter shows you how to bring it all together and how to soften off transitions and sharp edges. Viewer will also learn how to "ping" with light and how to push and pull final values.

Chapter1: Blocking In
This Full length "Start To Finish" DVD starts with the priming of the painting board with a base colour. The chapter then continues with the mixing of all base colour's needed with all mixtures listed on screen. The entire painting is then "blocked in" with the major shapes and form, concentrating on accurate vales and hues.
Chapter 2: The Background
This chapter instructs the viewer on how to achieve a "diffused" look or out of focus look without the use of airbrush. Through the use of a dry brush stoket and transition strokes the viewer learns to create a soft look. This chapter also deals with the use of warm and cool colour's and the use of "muting" colour.
Chapter 3: Rendering the Foliage
With the knowledge from the first two chapters under our belts we now move our attention to the detailing of the foliage. This chapter concentrates on negative painting, colour shifting, form creation, seamless edging and colour stepping. The viewer will learn how to use all of these techniques and to help create intricate detail.
Chapter 4: The Gold Finch
This is the "pay off" chapter were we detail the little American Gold Finch. In this chapter we learn to use warm and cool colour within the same hue to build up shape and form. The art of painting convincing shape and form within black area's is demonstrated. the viewer will learn how to hold the colour and use reflective colour to reinforce form. Painting a "living" eye is demonstrated and explains the need for reflective light and the use of ambient colour in the eye.
Chapter 5: Finishing Touches
This chapter begins with detailing the branch and the use of lighting and "banning" to create rounded forms. Final detailing through highlighting and shadowing is applied to finish of the painting. Derek touches on rim lighting, light source, shadowing and the use of "pinging" in this chapter.

Chapter1: The Colour Wheel This Full length Art Techniques DVD starts with dissecting the standard colour wheel. Colour theory begins with basic colour vocabulary and defines such terms as primary, secondary and tertiary colour. The chapter continues with explanations of tints, tones, shades, warm and cool colour's.
Chapter 2: What Is Colour This chapter breaks down the three major attributes of colour: Hue, intensity and value. Through on screen exercises the viewer will learn how to establish hue, evaluate the hues intensity and finally how to determine the hues vales with the use of value scales. The importance of pure colour is also included in this chapter.
Chapter 3: Colour Schemes With the knowledge of the first two chapters we now move on to the use of colour schemes. The viewer is introduced to different colour schemes and their visual properties. These schemes are then re-enforced by visual examples in both photography and in actual works of art by Derek. Through this chapter the viewer will learn how to use colour schemes and when it is appropriate to apply the individual colour schemes.
Chapter 4: Colour Relationships How colour reacts to other colour's introduced into it's vicinity is crucial to the active artist. This chapter deals with how to see and to understand colour optics and how environment of the colour can drastically change its appearance. Once again on screen demo's illustrate the effects of colour relationship and how to use them to your advantage.
Chapter 5: Colour Mixing This chapter begins with the introduction of Derek's studio palette and an explanation as to why he has these colour's in his palette. Explanation of warm and cool colour balance in a palette is explained and demonstrated. The viewer is then taken into the studio where Derek demonstrates first hand colour mixing and matching. Derek's tricks for accurate colour matching are revealed and demonstrated in this chapter. A internet link is provided inside for the download of files for the viewer to work along with Derek.
